Raspberry Pi models and specs Featured

Written by

The Raspberry Pi is a series of affordable Single Board Computers, equipped with powerfull ARM processors, they cover a large number of use-cases, from educational to professional.

But, what are Single Board Computers ? They are complete computers build entirely on a single electronic circuit board. Unlike commons desktop computers they cannot be upgraded as they don't rely on expansions connectors for peripherals or memory. They're commonly smaller and less power consuming than "normal computers" so, they are made to be used as embedded controllers for industrial, robotics, automotive applications and also for hobbyst and educational usage.

The Raspberry Pi board, thanks to its super low cost, allowed the creation of thousand of homemade projects that sometimes resulted in ingenious inventions successfully founded on crowfounding platforms. In this preamble I'll list the available Raspberry Pi models, to allow you to choose the one that best fits your needs.

Raspberry Pi 3

This is the latest model available. It was released in February 2016 and it replaced the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. You can easily find it on Amazon at a really affordable price.

Here are the specs:

CPU : Quad Core 1.2GHz Broadcom BCM2837 - Cortex A53 64bit CPU
RAM : 1GB
Wireless Connectivity : BCM43438 wireless LAN and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) on board
Wired Connecttivity : 40-pin expansion, 4 USB 2 ports,  3.5mm jack for audio & composit video out,HDMI,CSI camera port for connecting a Raspberry Pi camera, DSI display port for connecting a Raspberry Pi touchscreen display
Dimensions : 85.60 mm × 56.5 mm

Raspberry Pi Zero W

This is one of the cheapest embedded boards available on the market. At the ultra-low cost of ~10$ you'll have a complete computer on a tiny 65mm X 30mm board.

Here are the specs :

CPU : Mono core 1GHZ Broadcom BCM2835 , ARM1176JZFS with floating point.
RAM : 512 MB
Wireless Connectivity : 802.11 b/g/n wireless LAN, Bluetooth 4.1, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
Wired Connectivity : Micro USB OTG port, mini HDMI, 40 pin expansion connector
Dimensions : 65mm x 30mm x 5mm

Raspberry Pi 2 model B

This model was released in February 2015 and it is the first quadcore available in the family.

Here are the specs:

CPU : Quad Core 900 Mhz Broadcom BCM2836 - Cortex A7 32bit CPU
RAM : 1GB
Connecttivity : 40-pin expansion, 4 USB 2 ports,  3.5mm jack for audio & composit video out, HDMI, CSI camera port for connecting a Raspberry Pi camera, DSI display port for connecting a Raspberry Pi touchscreen display.
Dimensions : 85.60 mm × 56.5 mm

Raspberry Pi model B+

The first version Rasberry Pi 1 B was released in february 2011, it is not available anymore as it has been replaces by the model B+ in July 2014.
It's a relatively old model but you can still find it on Amazon, however I strongly suggest to pick one of the updated models above.

Here are the specs :

CPU : Mono core 700Mhz Broadcom BCM2835 , ARM1176JZFS with floating point.
RAM : 512 MB
Connections : 4 X USB 2 ports , HDMI, Ethernet, 3.5mm jack for audio & composit video out, 40 pin expansion connector
